Bernard Pomerance’s play The Elephant Man is based on the life of John (Joseph) Merrick, a severely deformed 19th-century Englishman. It follows his rescue from a cruel sideshow by a compassionate doctor who introduces him to high society, ultimately exploring themes of humanity, exploitation, and the tragic unattainability of "normalcy."
