Curtains is a brassy, fast-paced backstage musical comedy whodunit that lovingly skewers the chaotic world of commercial theater, written by the legendary team of Kander and Ebb with a book by Rupert Holmes. The story kicks off in 1959 at Boston’s Colonial Theatre during the disastrous out-of-town tryout of a new Wild West musical called Robbin' Hood of the Old West. When the show’s hyper-untalented and widely disliked leading lady, Jessica Cranshaw, mysteriously collapses and dies during the opening night curtain call, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi of the Boston Police Department is called in to investigate. Cioffi quickly determines that she was poisoned on stage, meaning the killer is a member of the company, and promptly locks down the building, trapping the entire cast and crew inside as prime suspects.
However, Cioffi harbors a secret of his own: he is an obsessive, starstruck musical theater enthusiast who spends his spare time acting in community theater. Instead of conducting standard, hard-boiled police interrogations, the detective gets completely distracted by the flaws of Robbin' Hood and begins offering staging notes, critiquing choreography, and helping the creative team fix the failing production. This colorful backstage circus includes Carmen Bernstein, a fierce, foul-mouthed powerhouse producer who cares about the box office above all else; Christopher Belling, a flamboyant, sharp-tongued director who hurls theatrical insults like weapons; and Georgia Hendricks, a lyricist who must reluctantly step into the spotlight as the new leading lady, sparking major tension with her ex-husband and songwriting partner, Aaron Fox.
