Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson tells the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, a pioneering early 20th-century astronomer working at the Harvard College Observatory.

Hired as a "computer"—part of a group of women tasked with cataloging data while barred from using the observatory's telescope—Henrietta struggles to be taken seriously in a male-dominated field. Working during her off-hours, her discovery of the pattern in Cepheid variable stars ultimately provided astronomers with the standard ruler needed to measure the distance between galaxies, fundamentally expanding our understanding of the universe.

The play explores the historical contributions of women in science, the clash between intellectual ambition and traditional family life, and the human desire to understand our place in the cosmos.
